In a letter, 1831 June 11, Ashland, Va., Clay writes to Richard Smith, Washington, D.C., acknowledging the latter's attention to Clay's financial affairs. Another letter, 1839 February 11, Washington, D.C., to Horace Greeley, Clay praises Greeley's proposed pamphlet on public lands and says that his own writings on the subject have been published in "Niles' register." Also included are two engravings of Clay.

Henry Clay Sr. (April 12, 1777 – June 29, 1852) was an American attorney and statesman who represented Kentucky in both the Senate and House.
